Questions & Answers with Neil Hogan - #16

Q. I heard somebody use the term high school guitar. Any idea what he may have been talking about?

A. I have used term high school guitar in the past to describe one of the eras in my life of learning the guitar. I started playing in elementary school and took lessons through about 6th grade. I guess that would have been the 1st era.

The 2nd era could be considered middle school guitar. This was where I started becoming aware of other guitar players around me and started listening to them with a little more critical ear. I began to sort things I heard into stuff I liked and stuff I didn’t. Then I tried to incorporate the stuff I liked into my playing.

The next era was high school guitar. This was when I started playing with other guitar players with a goal of creating something a little more practiced and polished. We had a band that played a lot of covers of the day.

This also included playing with the school orchestra in a performance of West Side Story. This was a major turning point in my guitar career as I was starting to think I was pretty good on the guitar. This also turned into the first major reality check of my career. Unfortunately I had many more to follow. Stay tuned.
