Q. I’d like to know a little more about scales on guitar. What are some of the most important ones to learn?

A. All musicians should have at least some knowledge of modes and scales on guitar or whatever instrument they are playing. I try to give every student a lesson or two on modes as well as scales right from the beginning because too many people think that the theory side of music is a little intimidating. The sooner you start becoming familiar with them, the less scary they will seem.

The best place to start for most people is learning a major scale, probably in the key of C. Unfortunately, sometimes people rely too much on the key of C but it is a good place to start because the natural notes are a little easier to understand.
