Questions & Answers with Neil Hogan - #1.9

Q. Can you tell me a little about the video guitar lessons you are offering at TotallyGuitars?

A. We are just starting to shoot our video guitar lessons and I have to say it is a blast. I was really unsure at first about how best to approach the whole thing. I come at this with most of my teaching experience being one onone in a small studio with my student.

One of the things that make private lessons so rewarding is that I get immediate feedback from my student as to what they understand and what they don’t understand. Generally the look of fuzziness and confusion in their eyes is a good clue. As soon as I realize that they are not getting whatever I am talking about, I take a different path of explanation. Sometimes we will go down three or four paths before things start making sense.

The first time I sat down in front of the camera and tried to give it a lesson I felt a little out of my element. After a couple of tries I figured out that the best approach might be to imagine I was talking to a classroom full of beginning students and make sure I was simplifying the concepts at that level.

As I work on more advanced lessons the explanations will be geared toward players who have more experience. Hopefully everyone will be able to find a lot of useful stuff here.
