Spook of the Week

Friday, October 31st, 2008 by Neil

Well, it’s raining here in Northern California on Halloween morning. I am trying to get to work on more videos but in a few hours I have to load up and head to Huntington Beach for the last softball tournament of the fall. It looks like next week we’ll start having some new material for everybody out there. I really appreciate the patience, as well as the great comments here and on YouTube.

Thanks especially to the folks who have joined the Forum recently, I have plans to get to some of the requests very soon.

See you,

Neil

Louie of the Week!

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008 by Neil

I was sifting through a week’s worth of unopened email messages the other day, deleting many and junking others when I decided to take a closer look at one titled “Congratulations! You have won the LOUIE of the week award.” Somewhat intrigued, and probably contrary to my better judgement, I considered opening it instead of just sending it off into the ether. With growing anticipation and a little uneasy trepidation, I clicked on the subject line, expecting the usual spammers’ pitch asking for a small sum of money to claim my winnings.

Surprisingly, my brave decision to continue was greeted with a very real and sincere message from the keepers of a web site dedicated to preserving and honoring all things related to one of the greatest landmarks in rock & roll history- the creation and preservation of Richard Berry’s classic, Louie Louie.

Yes, I had been chosen the winner of a weekly award that goes out to someone or something that is tied into the great song. It was one of the short videos I have up at YouTube, and many other similar sites, that talks a little about the song and describes how power chords are used in many classic rock & roll songs.

Needless to say, this is the first of what I hope are many accolades we might receive as we continue to develop TotallyGuitars. I am very grateful to the wonderful folks at louielouie.net. Check it out when you can at www.louielouie.net/blog/. It is a little way down the page at their listing dated Oct. 20, 2008.

Green Eyed Lady

Monday, October 20th, 2008 by Neil

What are you thinking, playing Green Eyed Lady on the acoustic guitar? This was the first response I got to what I thought was a really cool song. One of my students had started working on the main riff and when I remembered how cool it was I thought I’d better put up a quick video. The riff didn’t seem like enough to make it worthwhile so I went back and listened again to the original and realized that I could make a short solo arrangement of the intro, which was mostly bass and keyboards, with a couple of accented interjections by the guitar. Turns out it was a blast to work on, although I had to practice it for a few minutes while my family was around- it reminded me how hard it can be to listen to people practice. Here it is, in case you missed it.

Greetings from Surf City

First I’d like to thanks everybody who has been visiting TotallyGuitars, especially those who have joined us in the Forum. It’s great to get the song requests and to read the comments about what we are trying to do here.

It will be a few more days (or week or 2) before I can get back in front of the camera and work on the next set of lessons. I am helping out with some of the promotional stuff right now.

I know there is still some confusion as to how to access different parts of TotallyGuitars. In a nutshell, there are some common logins that work for the videos. Those will not work for the Forum section. You can create your own login for the Forum by entering your name and email address in the Register box. Then a temporary password will be emailed to you. You can then login and change the password to one of your favorites.

I might not get to answering much over the next few days, I am in beautiful Huntington Beach, CA (one of two claimants to the title “Surf City”, along with Santa Cruz) helping coach my daughters, Rebecca and Elizabeth’s softball team, the San Jose Lady Sharks. If you’re in the area come see them play!
