New Videos: Greg Lake, Stevie Nicks, The Hollies

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009 by Neil

Hi Gang,

Continuing with adding excerpts from lessons I have posted a variety of tunes over in the Video section-

Lucky Man from the first Emerson, Lake & Palmer album, which is basically a folk song using a few open chords and strummed in 6/8 time. It is in the Acoustic Songs Category.

Landslide, Stevie Nicks’ nice finger picking tune, from the first Fleetwood Mac album after she and Lindsey Buckingham joined the group, titled Fleetwood Mac (1975). It is in the Fingerstyle Songs Category.

And over in the Riff & Chord Songs Category we have one of the greatest opening riff ever, Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress, by Alan Clarke and his band at the time, The Hollies.

I hope these short segments can tide you over until the bigger stuff is ready!

Stay tuned and in touch,

Neil

P.S. - You’ve probably noticed all those funny looking links on the right of the page here.  Well, my web guys tell me that, THAT is the new way to stay in touch with all of the Totally Guitars members.  For example if you use Twitter, you can find my updates at http://www.twitter.com/totallyguitars

A Trip To The Mailbag…

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009 by Neil

Today I’d like to a few minutes and share some of the comments that have been coming in. I have to say I am really overwhelmed by most of the things you guys have had to say about the site. It is very encouraging to hear that we seem to be on a good path.

From Kevin Kerns-

Neil,
I have to tell you that I’m really excited that I found your site and became a member, but it’s been keeping me up late at night learning some of the cool stuff on there! I can’t wait to see what you have in store. I’m hoping that you’ll have right and left hand cameras and real time tab.

Keep up the great work man! Kevin Kerns

From Chris Larson-

:) I first met Neil about 6 years ago where he was a guest artist and teacher at Keola Beamer’s slack key music camp. He immediately struck me as an exceptionally clear, lucid and dedicated teacher, as well as a highly gifted musician. He was also very accessible and helpful, even though I had just met him for the first time. I have seen him only occasionally since that time, and my impressions remained the same.
I can only imagine that Neil’s web site will have all of those characteristics. His teaching is clear and concise and the tab I have seen is very accurate. It is obvious that he puts a great deal of energy and effort into all he does. I really look forward to the success of his on-line guitar teaching site.

Best Wishes, Chris

On Kodachrome-

Neil, great job! Thanks for all the details of how to play this song! I haven’t tried to play it yet but will soon. I always like to watch your training video through a couple of times to get the feel of the song before I try to play it.

Gary

From Paul in Maui-

Aloha Neil and Staff from Maui, Hawaii. I have to agree with you 1000%. Yes, 1000%! The new site is awesome! Thank you so much for letting us use it. If I were closer to you I’d love to get some personal lessons from you. Also, one of my favorite songs is The Boxer by Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. I was playing The Boxer on the board walk in Laguna Beach this summer and my friend who was in Ironman and MANY other movies walks up with none other than Paul Simon. Paul says to me “that’s really good but I finger pick it!” I held up my right hand (fingers towards him and said “I would but cut off all of my nails for volleyball; it hurts like hell when you fold a nail back” and he says “I can imagine.” LOL So, I have my 3 acrylic nails back now and I am now finger picking The Boxer. I also LOVE Travis Picking Dust In The Wind and Blackbird!

So, how about coming to Maui to give me about 4 days of lessons? I’ll pay for a very nice condo just downstairs from my place and we are right across the street from the beach!

Aloha, Paul

From shoulderoforion at YouTube

You remind me of the professors at the University of Chicago. They are so impassioned and knowledgeable about their subject that they cannot stop the digressions. Maybe that’s why the school has has seventy-some Nobel Prize winners (wait, I digress). “A Nobel Prize winner” is often on the list during the annual scavanger hunt. (oops, I digress) Unfortunately, you are now going to have to start wearing socks with your sandals because…….oh well……because you… digress. It’s a long story!

…now I don’t want to send out the impression that everybody is thrilled with what we are doing at TotallyGuitars.  There have been a few complaints have been about login issues or viewing the videos that I believe have been addressed in the FAQ on the Home page.

Some people have asked about the full screen option and we are still working on the best plan for that but the biggest complaint is not enough detail in the Part 1 and Part 2 videos. I guess it’s not obvious to some but those are samples of what we have in store for you here at TotallyGuitars.

I can’t say too much about when the rest of any of the lessons will be available but believe me, I am as anxious as you are. All in good time…

That’s it for today’s trip to the mailbag-

Keep the fingers flying and…

Stay tuned and in touch,

Monday Afternoon Concert - Neil’s Claxton Guitar

Monday, March 30th, 2009 by Neil

Hi Gang,

Well, I meant to get this to you last night but the planets weren’t properly aligned, or the stars were in my eyes, or the leprechauns came back for a little revenge… something conspired to sidetrack me and misplace the video.  In any case, I wanted to show you a clip from a few years ago where I talk a little (or as little as I can!) about one of the two guitars in my life.

The one I’ve had the longest is the Santa Cruz Guitar which we talked about a few weeks ago after I visited Richard Hoover. That guitar was built for me in 1981 and I use it everyday when I am giving lessons, you may have seen it in a few videos. However, most of the videos are shot with a guitar built by Ed Claxton, who coincidentally lives in Santa Cruz as well.

In this video from the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in, you guessed it, Santa Cruz, I was about to tell some story and go into a song when a member of the audience asked about the guitar.  Now I am not usually very easily distracted and led down unplanned paths (or am I?), but I ended up talking a bit about how the guitar came into my life and ended up playing the first piece I wrote on it, On A Gentle Wind, which if I remember correctly, I don’t think I had planned to play that evening.

I think of the song as a lullaby so be careful if you start watching this at work one afternoon.  The video is in the Concert category of the Video section- On A Gentle Wind. I hope you enjoy it.

As usual, keep the cards and letters coming!

Stay tuned and in touch,

Neil

Romeo And Juliet - Dire Straits

Monday, March 30th, 2009 by Neil

Hi Gang,

There has been some discussion over on the Forum about this great Mark Knopfler tune, and it seems to be a little quirky getting files attached there. One of our very active members, Chasplaya was good enough to send me his version of the guitar part (which is very accurate by the way- good job Chas!) and I have posted the pdf to Romeo And Juliet, I hope. It is played in Open G Tuning, with a capo at the 3rd fret, and on a Dobro, or resonator guitar, but sounds great on any old everyday acoustic guitar anyway. It’s pretty challenging and I will get to a lesson on it sometime but it might be a little while.

I want to mention that the amount of feedback we are getting on the site is overwhelming and we really appreciate all comments, positive and negative, as we are totally committed to making TotallyGuitars the best instructional site on the net. A little later (maybe today) I will share some of those comments with you, including the offer of a few days in Maui! Till then…

Stay tuned and in touch,

Neil

Sunday Morning Mini-Lesson Updates

Sunday, March 29th, 2009 by Neil

Hi Gang,

Today I have added a couple more Part 1 & 2 videos, My My Hey Hey and Madman Across The Water.  They are over in the Riff & Chord Songs Section of the Video page.  I know some of you are getting anxious about the next parts and, believe me, I’m right there with you.  I just have to get these projects finished in an organized manner or the final result will be really scattered and disorganized.

There has been quite a surge in registrations over the last few days and I would like to take this opportunity to welcome and thank all our new subscribers.

I hope you get a chance to check out the many different aspects and sections here at TotallyGuitars.com.  Be sure to take a look at the TG Community page and look into the groups and discussions.

Please feel free to join in the Forum as well, as that is where we get the best ideas as far as the future evolution and development of TotallyGuitars.

Today I am off to teach a steel-string guitar workshop at a classical guitar festival.  I hope they are receptive to some of the unusual things that we do on my favorite type of guitar.  I also hope they check their competitive egos at the door, but let’s keep that between you and me.

I’ll get back with a report, maybe…

Tip O’ The Day- Fingerpicking Position for the Right Hand

Saturday, March 28th, 2009 by Neil

Hi Gang,

Today, a beautiful Saturday morning here in Northern California I might add, I’d like to take a look at a really important aspect of fingerpicking- Right Hand Position. Now, I am not addressing hand position as much as finger positioning with respect to the strings. This video starts with some answers to the question, “which finger hits which string?”

I like to have students thinks about “home position” as the default way of assigning fingers to strings. Check out the new Quick Tip video on Right Hand Position.

That’s it for now… off to enjoy the weather and daughters’ softball game once again…

Stay tuned and in touch,

How to Play Green River!

Friday, March 27th, 2009 by Neil

Hi Gang,

Thanks to enough requests from our viewers, Green River managed to take cuts in the queue. The 2 parts are now posted in the Video section under the Fingerstyle category. I hope there is enough info there to get you started on the mono bass technique. We will explore this with much more depth very soon.

I recently had a few minutes to check out what was going on over in the Community section and was really surprised to see how many people have joined in.  It is great to see groups getting together, especially over some of my favorite bands, Yes, The Beatles… any Gentle Giant or Renaissance fans out there?

I would love to get to some of their songs… let me know what you think about 70s progressive rock sometime.

It is also really cool to see all the videos people are posting. Everybody here at TotallyGuitars.com is very excited by the feedback and response we are getting from you.

I would especially like to encourage folks to follow Richard’s lead and post some tunes you have learned from our site. The photos and comments are great too- keep them coming!

Stay tuned and in touch,

Tip O’ The Day: How to Strum with a Pick

Thursday, March 26th, 2009 by Neil

Hi Gang,

After a brief hiatus, the tips segments return today. Here are some tips on holding a pick as well as techniques that will get you a better sound when you are strumming. Check out the new QT video- Strumming With a Pick.

I keep finding more missing TABs and links. Today I re-posted the attachment for Time In A Bottle, which had been a popular request (…complaint?…). I also fixed the older videos on Babe I’m Gonna Leave You, Blackbird, and From The Beginning, I think. Be sure to keep me aprised of any other missing files or links.

Stay tuned and in touch,

Neil

TAB and Video Update

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009 by Neil

Hi Gang,

The planets are starting to align! I have found most of the missing TAB files and am able to attach them to the videos. I think I have found and removed the damaged videos. They are back in our video tech department and should be repaired soon. At this point I would like to ask everybody to check the Video section for me and let me know of any missing or damaged stuff that slipped through the cracks. The best place to post info for this would be by responding to this post.

Here are some of the songs that had TAB or Chord/Lyrics files added today-

Kodachrome
Friend Of The Devil
Goodbye Blue Sky
Cat’s In The Cradle
And coming soon
Blackbird and Babe I’m Gonna Leave You video fixes

Needless to say, we are all still working very hard on improving TotallyGuitars.com and the more feedback and comments we get from you the better.

Spot The Slip… ongoing

I’m sure you have noticed a higher pace to the changes around here. Of course part of this is the appearance of more videos (although have I mentioned the “tip of the iceberg” lately?…), and this means a higher incidence of “slips” in the videos. I would like to make this an ongoing feature- as you watch a video, be sure to pay attention and make sure that what I say and what I do are consistent. If you spot a slip, report it on the Forum, where I will be adding a Spot The Slip board with some guidelines soon.

Check the Blog post from last week Suspended 4th Chords for our 1st example. We might even put up a scoreboard… in the meantime-

Stay tuned and in touch,

Neil

A Few for Tuesday…

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009 by Neil

Hi Gang,

I haven’t been able to put in as much time as I hoped to lately but did manage to get a few more tunes ready. Some of the new songs are more recent versions of things we looked at before but I am still experimenting with a good format and system for online lessons so here are some of the latest. Today’s tunes include-

Over The Hills and Far Away
Norwegian Wood
Never Going Back Again
Oh Well

We have made a few strides in the quest for getting the TAB to you, now I just have to dig through the archives and find the best copies of many arrangements. I have a habit of keeping every copy and incarnation of each arrangement I do. This is one of those times where that could cause some trouble as I now have to look at them all again and compare differences. In any case, it’s on my list of things to do to enhance everybody’s experience here at TotallyGuitars.com.

I think I have removed any videos that were not working properly and will be fixing those soon. Be sure to let me know if you find any others that don’t seem right.

Stay tuned and in touch,

Neil

P.S. I want to send out a special thanks to Richard K. for posting his video of Never Going Back Again. If you haven’t seen it check the Acoustic Guitar Songs section over on the Forum. He did a great job and I am certainly happy to have been a help in his learning the song.
