A couple of new videos are up and ready for your enjoyment and education. I have finished short lessons on a couple of songs that have been at YouTube for quite a while now.
The 1st is on the opening riff to Hocus Pocus, a novelty song from one of my favorite bands, Focus, and guitar players, Jan Akkerman. The song itself is a bit too involved to do a complete lesson on but the intro riff is pretty cool. You can find Hocus Pocus up in the Free Lessons section for all our visitors.
Another song I have meant to finish up for a long time is Tuesday Afternoon. I have done a couple different versions of the intro, one as close to possible to the original recording from 1967, and a 2nd more the way Justing Hayward plays if live nowadays. It is up in the TARGET Section and is part of the TARGET Short Series.
I am off for a week of softball with my girls in Colorado tomorrow but there are a lot of new things happening and planned for this week so be sure to check the Blog everyday if you can. My TG Teammates will be rolling out some new features all week. I expect to be staying in touch mostly on the Forum so keep those cards & letters coming (well, at least the comments and questions).
I want to let you know about some of the new features and changes that are happening today. We have opened the Audio Store- a place where you can sample and purchase my solo guitar albums. It is a new tab on the main menu bar up above. There is a short video with a little more info down below.
Here are the videos I have so far for a popular request, Angie by The Rolling Stones. The parts can be found over in the Acoustic Songs Category on the Video page. There are a few more loose ends to get up so I hope you can get a little out of this.
Continuing with adding excerpts from lessons I have posted a variety of tunes over in the Video section-
Lucky Man from the first Emerson, Lake & Palmer album, which is basically a folk song using a few open chords and strummed in 6/8 time. It is in the Acoustic Songs Category.
Landslide, Stevie Nicks’ nice finger picking tune, from the first Fleetwood Mac album after she and Lindsey Buckingham joined the group, titled Fleetwood Mac (1975). It is in the Fingerstyle Songs Category.
And over in the Riff & Chord Songs Category we have one of the greatest opening riff ever, Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress, by Alan Clarke and his band at the time, The Hollies.
I hope these short segments can tide you over until the bigger stuff is ready!
Stay tuned and in touch,
Neil
P.S. - You’ve probably noticed all those funny looking links on the right of the page here.ย Well, my web guys tell me that, THAT is the new way to stay in touch with all of the Totally Guitars members.ย For example if you use Twitter, you can find my updates at http://www.twitter.com/totallyguitars
I’m also on Facebook and Myspace and all those other sites you see over to your right.ย In any case, pick the one you like to use, make me your friendย and please keep in touch.ย ย There’s tons of new and exciting things coming up daily!
I haven’t been able to put in as much time as I hoped to lately but did manage to get a few more tunes ready. Some of the new songs are more recent versions of things we looked at before but I am still experimenting with a good format and system for online lessons so here are some of the latest. Today’s tunes include-
Over The Hills and Far Away
Norwegian Wood
Never Going Back Again
Oh Well
We have made a few strides in the quest for getting the TAB to you, now I just have to dig through the archives and find the best copies of many arrangements. I have a habit of keeping every copy and incarnation of each arrangement I do. This is one of those times where that could cause some trouble as I now have to look at them all again and compare differences. In any case, it’s on my list of things to do to enhance everybody’s experience here at TotallyGuitars.com.
I think I have removed any videos that were not working properly and will be fixing those soon. Be sure to let me know if you find any others that don’t seem right.
Stay tuned and in touch,
Neil
P.S. I want to send out a special thanks to Richard K. for posting his video of Never Going Back Again. If you haven’t seen it check the Acoustic Guitar Songs section over on the Forum. He did a great job and I am certainly happy to have been a help in his learning the song.
A few more videos are ready- Parts 1 and 2 of the following songs-
Paint It Black
Proud Mary
Same Mistake
Ripple
Rhiannon
Still… You Turn Me On
Stairway To Heaven
Check the Video section…
Right now anything in the Part 3 or more department is still on the drawing board so I hope there will be enough Parts 1 and 2 to tide everybody over for awhile.
Thanks again for the comments and suggestions. I know the big shots are listening!
Your Sunday morning wake up call today is Uncle John’s Band. This is an example of a somewhat simple strumming song with an unusual time signature shift into 3/4 for one measure near the beginning. Count carefully and make sure you know where it is.
This is a bit of an example of a song that is good for beginners but if you want to add in the melody, like I did in the 2nd verse, it can be a good challenge for even advanced players.
The TotallyGuitars.com web site is coming along, as you can see, and I’m still working on the TAB files and the continuation videos, in case anybody is asking…
I really appreciate the info and questions that folks are posting in the Forum section. It is great to have our visitors answer questions there.
Working on a special concert video for tonight. Till then-
Wow, I am overwhelmed by the responses and contributions that have been pouring in today. I’d like to update you on what I am working on right now because it is directly tied to most of your questions.
With the new TotallyGuitars.com site live, I am working hard to get 2 main things up as soon as possible- the continuation (Part 2) videos of the short ones available at YouTube and similar sites, and the TAB files as pdfs for some of the lessons that are already in our Video section. The more I work at it, the more I realize it is going to take longer than I thought. Bear with me, it will be worth the wait.
In honor of the contributions pouring in, and the fact that my daughters’ softball game is in a rain delay that has allowed me to get this post out, I would like you to take a look at a great song for beginning guitar players: Who’ll Stop The Rain. It really just requires some open chords and a simple strumming pattern. Have fun and let me know what you think.
As far as the weather here in Northern California, it looks like the rain is stopping and I’m on my way back to the fields.
I hope everybody is enjoying the new site. I have 2 immediate thoughts-
First, I love the look and feel and we’ve taken a huge step in the direction that I hoped the site would go. I think we have just about eliminated most of the kinks that were plaguing us and navigation and logging in should now be much more intuitive. So, on one hand, I am thrilled, proud, excited, and somewhat relieved. With that said…
As I’m sure you know, many of us have been putting in hundreds of hours to create and improve the site and get it running smoothly. My second thought was that once we got to this stage and wouldn’t have to deal with so many bugs, I might be able to slow down a bit. Maybe even relax and enjoy the site.
Well, I did relax and spent some little time (in the middle of last night) exploring and enjoying the new TotallyGuitars.com. I had a great time as I figured out the new landscape and saw all the comments coming in… until I realized that many, if not all, of the obstacles that were now removed, meant that I had to stop dealing with technical problems, and start delivering all the stuff I wanted to. This meant going back through my files of videos, tabs, etc. and getting them loaded and accessible to you.
I am on it! But, I do need to ask once again for your patience as I reorganize my stuff and figure out the best way to get it to you. Be sure to check back here often as I know new things will be appearing on an hourly basis now.
Be sure to visit our Forum section and anytime you have a question or an answer to somebody’s question, please join in. I will be checking in there constantly and try to respond to anything I can as quickly as possible. It is much easier to keep questions and answers on-topic there. Please continue to offer suggestions and comments on Blog posts here. I do get every one of them.
This morning I’d like to bring you another mini look at a song I like to have most of my students learn. It also shows an example of the kind of thing I like to do with songs- make solo, instrumental arrangements of them. Most of these start out as improvisations when I am just having fun playing the guitar. Frequently I randomly put together a few chords, which then remind me of a song, and I start looking for a way to incorporate the melody into the harmony, add a little accompaniment and voila, something cool starts taking shape. Here is a little taste of how Wish You Were Here evolved into one of these.
