TOPIC: Reading Sheet Music Notation

Reading Sheet Music Notation 1 Year, 11 Months ago
Lots of music theory on the website – don’t see any instruction on how to actually read sheet music notation.

You could create your own simple course or use one of the many widely available books (Alfred’s has always been my favorite - available on Amazon for $10).

Tabs are great – but nothing beats the ability to actually read notes. Even when reading Tabs find myself also looking at the accompanying music notation for timing.

Don’t know if you’re aware of the demographics of your subscribers – from the song selection – going to guess it’s older (which attracted me).

Might find you’ll attract more youth with music sight reading lessons. Feel learning to read music in junior high greatly improved my aptitude for mathematics in High School.

Willing to provide assistance.

I agree Dan, a valuable skill for any musician. It does make the music make sense.

I am all for having some lessons on standard notation. It doesn,t need to be a video but something that could be use as a reference. Per example if Neil,in a video, is talking about a certain aspect of the rhythm, he could refer to a document available from the site where the explanation is. I think we would become better musician by knowing this aspect. Of course we can learn from a book directly , but it is tedious and difficult without any guideline. Having some reference from pratical (video) to theory directly here would be highly motivating.

Marc,

More importantly - a good teacher can make it fun - not “tedious and difficult”.

Neil has already made it entertaining to learn Major / Minor / & Pentatonic scales.

Bet he can do the same with quarter notes on the treble clef.
