YEH!!!!! And I like your thinkin'. It's time indeed. I'll put my thinking cap on. I'm sure we can rouse some of the rabble. :)

Woo hoo!

Hey Jason - Driving Towards the Daylight is essentially a 5 chord song. :) 3/4 chords plus a couple is the dealio. :) Opportunity is knockin'. :)

You got it Jason, the last chord is an A (Fmaj7-shape, except he plays it with his pinky, since it was already there when playing the D5-chordshape. Personally I'd never play both chords with my pinky, but hey.....who....blah blah! :P And yes, he does slide back to a G (avoid the topstring and bottomstring though) and back to A. (Definitely no E in the bass.)

The Esus4 and E5 are not borrowed chords, again, they function as an Em, especially E5 and Esus4 resolves to that (hence the hammeron). Leaving out the third of a chord doesn't change the function of it.

The D5-chordshape with the open strings gives it a sus2, sus4 and 6 (doesn't mean he hits them all). There is no third, so for that, it's a sus2 and not an add9.

And yes, you got the riff-thing in the bridge figured out as well!

Well done my friend! The coffee was great! :P

Edit: One last thing, when he lands on E5 (the chordshape that is), along with the open strings, it's an Em.

Cool, thanks young lady!

I HAVE to start spending more time figuring things out. I can't HEAR chords.... You pick any old chord and play it, I might be able to tell you if it is minor or major, but I can't tell you what chord it is or pick up things like maj7, sus2, sus4, etc.... A lot of times I just have to start at C Major and then play all sorts of chords til I find Something that sounds right... :( Very long and cumbersome.... Once I am able to find the I Chord, and determine the key, it opens all sorts of doors.... Borrowed chords can trip me up sometimes as well...

It is stuff like this thread that helps out tremendously. I also know that I won't improve, unless I do this more often... ;)

Good tips, but air travel with a guitar is very much a YMMV (your mileage may vary) prospect, and from what I hear depends very much on the boarding gate agents' mood (so smile at them).

I have two travel guitar options: a Yamaha SLG110S "Silent Guitar" that I use when only I have to hear my playing, and a Composite Acoustics OX ("Carbon Guitar", which is what I will use for guitar camp 2014, 2015, .... Neither is my best guitar.

I have traveled with both on international flights. When traveling with a guitar, it is my main carry-on item. I use a messenger bag (read: man-purse) as my personal item, containing passport, noise-reducing headset, tablet, phone, and chargers. I stuff a change of underwear, socks, and shirt into the guitar case, mostly as padding around the headstock, and tune three or four half-steps down.

The SLG is small enough that it will fit easily in an overhead bin. I once had a check-in agent (El-Al) say that I need to check the SLG, but she agreed that I could take it with me and gate-check it if needed (it wasn't). All other times, absolutely no problem, never been asked for it to be moved. I do make sure that other passengers are careful when stuffing their items into the bin, usually by offering to help.

The CA OX is a small guitar and has a Gator rigid EPS foam case with a fabric cover that looks like a soft gig-bag but is much tougher. It's not sturdy enough to check at the check-in counter, but is OK to go with the strollers. I've only traveled with it once so far (JFK to Tel Aviv), and I knew that I was sitting at the back of the plane (Delta 747) where it narrows and there are only two seats instead of three between the window and the aisle, and that there was plenty of room to put the guitar on the floor between the seat and the window. The guitar went through security like any other carry-on, and wasn't opened. When traveling with this guitar I will always make sure I have priority boarding.I think that that is Wiley's most important tip.

Regarding locks--IMHO, TSA, or any other, locks are useless. Anybody who is into opening luggage at an airport in order to steal already has a set of TSA keys. They are not hard to make. And if it's a guitar, they can just take the guitar, complete with case, and walk away. I've never had anybody check that my baggage matches my baggage check stub after picking it off the carousel. I've stopped locking my bags. I just don't put anything of value in checked bags.

Works for me now on the iPad, but not on my PC or laptop. I wonder if Neil is using a different codec for the reviews than for the lessons, all of which play fine.

Anyway, thanks very much for these suggestions. The first one - to not play beat two in the intro - is a big improvement. The others I'd done consciously, but didn't fully realise I'd dropped a beat in the process. I'll definitely spend some time on they.

Thanks,

Neil,

I really appreciate your positive comments in this weeks recap about the song I wrote for Amanda. Many folks on the site have been very kind with their comments and I must admit, that makes me feel very good. Almost addictive :)

I probably should report that I performed the song live for her at a gathering of her friends (If you can imagine a bunch of 17 & 18 year old girls and boys listening) and several of us older family friends and it went over very well. Not a dry eye in the house... I actually got all of the runs correct when I performed the song live. Unlike a few I missed on the video.

Anyway, she felt like it was a special gift that will be a once in a lifetime thing.

Thanks again for all you do to help us!!!

Hi Everyone,

Today's Target and Pay Per Lesson release is now live.

James River Blues is a basic Bluegrass strumming song that only uses a few chords and fills in some solo parts with fiddle leads. It was released in 2006 on Old Crow Medicine Show’s album Big Iron World. The lesson is presented in the ‘Work It Out’ format, focusing on ear training, and stresses the importance of understanding the relationships between the chords in order to play it in any key.

Enjoy this level 4 lesson!

It had a video with some exercises (I think).

On album covers: It would be a good marketing idea to release CDs inside an old fashioned-sized album cover with all the cover art and bells and whistles... those were the days when you'd take one home and deliciously discover all the treasures on the album and cover/inlays/leaves.

You might find cd's scarce in the future, the way the trend for downloading is going. :( That will be a sad day. :(

One other thing: I would refrain from thinking of the "simpler" songs as not being worth learning because they're not chord-solo material or highly advanced in some other way. Of course, this all depends on where you're at in your learning, but for me anyway, a whole bunch of the simpler tunes have been worth learning (and not always so simple), including very recent ones, like some of the Dawes tunes, "Stormy Monday," "Song for Adam," the dreaded "Midnight at The Oasis," and others. In each case, there has been at least some little thing in there that has strengthened my skills in some way (or will do so when I get to them) - or else, they're just fun tunes to play, singing or not. I don't sing at all, myself.

Study #2 is much like Study #1, key of C, first position, mostly meant as a sight-reading exercise, but this time there are additional thoughts about when to hold notes and when to mute them. It includes playing it through as a single line instrument, maybe a flute, and a polyphonic instrument like a harp. The Break It Down segment offers some suggestions on finding the middle ground that might be best for the guitar.

Enjoy this level 1 lesson!

That was lovely in every way. The picking in this song is really beautiful and Kev' you pulled it off no sweat! I actually enjoyed the bit where there could've been a piano involved, but now you could just hear the picking really well, sure nice as well. No sweat for Daryl as well, wouldn't think otherwise!

Well sung Chris, can imagine that you took it down an octave, which sounds really nice as well, and Miss Ale's singing added a very nice touch to it!

Great work guys and gal!!

Thanks Ness.A piano in that part would have been great. And thanks for taking a look at it. I understand about not having time. Hoping we can get together on another one.

Best to you Ness.
