Hi Everyone,

Today's Target and Pay Per Lesson release is now live.

In the early days The Rolling Stones were primarily a blues band. By 1965 they started branching out into ballads and other styles and Play With Fire is a good example of this growth. The song only uses a few chords and somewhat random picking to create an intimate, moody song. The lesson is presented as an ear-training exercise so listen and watch before printing out the attachments.

Enjoy this level 3 lesson!

I hit the SUBMIT prematurely. I hate when I do that,

SUZI: Again, thinks for the heads up on D. Scott. I listened to it again and I still think he's like a cross between Dave Mathews and James McMurtry.
Also, boy are you right about recreating Di Franco's percussive grooves. Greg has fair dose of that in his playing as well.
JASON: At first I was surprised to see u mention a Non-JB tune. But then I remembered you have some pretty eclectic tastes aside from your J. Browne devotion.
Looks like your hard work at dissecting these tunes is really paying off for you. You did a whale of a job on that Joey B tune!!! Very impressive!

Michele:

Thanks for the kind words. Vanessa really did the hard part, by identifying the chords. I just put the measures and chords into form... I wish I was better at identifying chords. Video helps, but I hope to someday get there just by listening and HEARING them. The run was pretty easy, but still fun. The naming of the chords can be tricky. Just because a chord has certain notes, the lowest note may not be the tonic. It makes it easy for some of us to confuse them. My old guitar teacher told me it also depended on how the chord was being used. I get the concept, but I am lost on progressions, and how certain chords are used to set up other chords. I think understanding that would also be a big leap in understanding how to break a song down...

I try and play this two to three times a night along with a few other songs I am learning. I can get the chorus and bridge parts in a passable manner, but the intro/verse trips me up. The G5 - Dsus2add6 - Csus2 is easy, but the Esus4 - E5 gets me. The hammer on itself is easy enough, but getting the Esus4 down solid is proving tedious... :S I'll get it eventually... The vocals are a long way off...ugh...

Overall, like I have mentioned before, it is a really basic set of chords (found in countless other songs), dressed up a bit to a nice driving beat. Fun to play.

Cori's thread on what songs each of us would like got salivating for the next one. I am off to figure out P.F. Sloan.... :)

I remember going to my sisters recitals and I seem to remember it was more of a hey, let's play this one classical piece and that's that kinda deal. Apologizes to my sis, but this is way, way more advanced.
I mean wow, composing her own stuff! It's excellent too IMO.

In response to a 'question' dealing with different positions and learning, or memorizing, the notes there.

Honestly, I was not trying to make light of the work it takes to do this, just trying to explain an easy way to go about it, simplify if one will.

We talk about 'practice procedures' at times, what we may call 'warming up'. I began a while back doing two things.

First, I work on finding that just enough amount of pressure, just how hard I need to press down. I do that by starting off with a mute, then trying like crazy to take an entire count of ten down before I make the note sing.

At the same time, I work my way up and down the neck, and across, saying outloud (unless of course someone else can hear, kind of embarrassing) the name of each note. I started down the neck to the fifth fret, once I could do so, forwards and backwards, I moved down to eight frets, and so on until I got to twelve which is a repeat of course. Taking it in small, easy steps. Sometimes fifth to ninth, sometimes second to sixth, and so on.

Across the strings, from E to e, I started on the open strings, then the first fret. Then third, fifth, and so on.

I have also sat and drawn out scales and the like on fretboard paper, over and over again and again. That's when and where the two down to the floor and two up the neck (towards the soundhole) (in most but not all cases, changes at the fourth string) or, the geometry, became clear(er).

In all honesty, I still work on this, every time I sit down, before I practice whatever it is I'm going to practice. Someday I'll get it all down. Then, like in all those Poker Odds and Formulas I've learned, I'll figure out which and why some are important and some aren't.

I've never worried about sharps/flats, simply due to the fact if I can find the 'natural' - the sharp/flat is half-step either above or below. Same as the e and E. I do count them as I 'warm-up', more out of habit than need (the e and E that is).

I have to give credit for this Neil and Alex DeGrassi.

I'll also do things like find every A, the next day, every B, and so forth.

So, to answer the question - nope, no 'easy' answer, just easier than you might think after you get started.

Fifth fret or fifth 'position'?

Fifth fret = A nd D ogs G ot C ar E ars A lways would be the fifth fret.

*NOTE 1: open position = Elephants And Dogs Got Big Ears. **Remember the fourth fret on "G"(3rd string) is B, so fifth fret is "C".

**NOTE 2: this holds true in 'normal' tuning

***NOTE 3: in 'normal' tuning, learn either the 1st or 6th (really should be the sixth or Big E string). The opposite, the outside E and e, are the same 'name', different octaves mind you, but same 'letter' designation.

****NOTE 4: Big E (6th string) is E2, little e (1st string) is E4. So, again in 'normal' tuning, the two outside strings are always two octaves apart.

*****Final NOTE: You can make up your own little diddy, like "Every Acid Dealer Gets Busted Eventually" for the open strings.

:-D BUMP!

7 months and three weeks is FAR too long for this monster thread to be lurking in the deep, so I'm giving it floaties. :)

The VERY talented Cori and Krista are working on a new contribution to this thread. I LOVE their work and can't wait to see what they come up with. Cori has also issued a challenge (in the banner thread) for others to join in the fun and to get the 3/4 chord song party kicking again. I'm game. Who else will join us? :) :)

For anyone who hasn't seen this thread, you're in for a bunch of treats. There are lots of seriously cool songs in here that have relatively few chords. The first page is an index that was created by Daryl to turn this thread into a learning resource too. Brilliant!

This is an opportunity for long time members and new people alike to post a relatively straightforward song and have some fun. It's more relaxed than posting videos for review.

So 3 or 4 chords really means - primarily a small amount of of chords; some in here have 6 and more. That's cool. Don't let the number limit what you put up if you'd like to post something.

I'm looking forward to seeing the new additions.

The gauntlet is down. Who will pick it up next? Woo hoo! B)

Subject: air travel for guitars - by: Catman

Good tips, but air travel with a guitar is very much a YMMV (your mileage may vary) prospect, and from what I hear depends very much on the boarding gate agents' mood (so smile at them).

I have two travel guitar options: a Yamaha SLG110S "Silent Guitar" that I use when only I have to hear my playing, and a Composite Acoustics OX ("Carbon Guitar", which is what I will use for guitar camp 2014, 2015, .... Neither is my best guitar.

I have traveled with both on international flights. When traveling with a guitar, it is my main carry-on item. I use a messenger bag (read: man-purse) as my personal item, containing passport, noise-reducing headset, tablet, phone, and chargers. I stuff a change of underwear, socks, and shirt into the guitar case, mostly as padding around the headstock, and tune three or four half-steps down.

The SLG is small enough that it will fit easily in an overhead bin. I once had a check-in agent (El-Al) say that I need to check the SLG, but she agreed that I could take it with me and gate-check it if needed (it wasn't). All other times, absolutely no problem, never been asked for it to be moved. I do make sure that other passengers are careful when stuffing their items into the bin, usually by offering to help.

The CA OX is a small guitar and has a Gator rigid EPS foam case with a fabric cover that looks like a soft gig-bag but is much tougher. It's not sturdy enough to check at the check-in counter, but is OK to go with the strollers. I've only traveled with it once so far (JFK to Tel Aviv), and I knew that I was sitting at the back of the plane (Delta 747) where it narrows and there are only two seats instead of three between the window and the aisle, and that there was plenty of room to put the guitar on the floor between the seat and the window. The guitar went through security like any other carry-on, and wasn't opened. When traveling with this guitar I will always make sure I have priority boarding.I think that that is Wiley's most important tip.

Regarding locks--IMHO, TSA, or any other, locks are useless. Anybody who is into opening luggage at an airport in order to steal already has a set of TSA keys. They are not hard to make. And if it's a guitar, they can just take the guitar, complete with case, and walk away. I've never had anybody check that my baggage matches my baggage check stub after picking it off the carousel. I've stopped locking my bags. I just don't put anything of value in checked bags.

Anyway, thanks very much for these suggestions. The first one - to not play beat two in the intro - is a big improvement. The others I'd done consciously, but didn't fully realise I'd dropped a beat in the process. I'll definitely spend some time on they.

Neil,

I really appreciate your positive comments in this weeks recap about the song I wrote for Amanda. Many folks on the site have been very kind with their comments and I must admit, that makes me feel very good. Almost addictive :)

I probably should report that I performed the song live for her at a gathering of her friends (If you can imagine a bunch of 17 & 18 year old girls and boys listening) and several of us older family friends and it went over very well. Not a dry eye in the house... I actually got all of the runs correct when I performed the song live. Unlike a few I missed on the video.

Anyway, she felt like it was a special gift that will be a once in a lifetime thing.

Thanks again for all you do to help us!!!

Hi Everyone,

Today's Target and Pay Per Lesson release is now live.

James River Blues is a basic Bluegrass strumming song that only uses a few chords and fills in some solo parts with fiddle leads. It was released in 2006 on Old Crow Medicine Show’s album Big Iron World. The lesson is presented in the ‘Work It Out’ format, focusing on ear training, and stresses the importance of understanding the relationships between the chords in order to play it in any key.

Enjoy this level 4 lesson!

You need to see a doctor. I've had similar situation after intense waterskiing, but full functionality always returned after a few days. Seems to me there was a post here on TG a year or two ago dealing with this, but I can't seem to find it. Maybe someone else knows where it is and can point you to it. It had a video with some exercises (I think).

Hope all goes well.

On album covers: It would be a good marketing idea to release CDs inside an old fashioned-sized album cover with all the cover art and bells and whistles... those were the days when you'd take one home and deliciously discover all the treasures on the album and cover/inlays/leaves.

You might find cd's scarce in the future, the way the trend for downloading is going. :( That will be a sad day. :(
