Q. Have you found a good place for someone to take guitar lessons online?
A. After looking all over the web for good places to take guitar lessons
online I have found a few good places and a lot of useless places. In general
the web has become both a great resource for many things as well as a very
suspect source of much information.
A good example of this is YouTube. The quality of
course ranges from pretty good to pretty bad. The easy accessibility makes it a
good place for anybody to post his or her take on learning the guitar.
Unfortunately, many of the people trying to explain something there frequently
don’t really understand the concept they’re addressing. This problem is
commonly combined with a lack of good communication skills. Most viewers don’t
have the time to sift through everything available to find the good stuff.
As more people are setting up
instructional sites the quality is generally improving. The main thing I would
look for is a site that has some kind of interactivity available. Most sites
are really no better than an instructional DVD where the instructor just
lectures and demonstrates how to play a tune. A really useful site would have
at least a way for the student to get questions answered and possibly a way to
upload videos that could be critiqued or corrected by the instructor.
At Totally Guitars we are offering both of those as
part of our guitar lessons online. We are encouraging all our viewers to get
involved, tell us what you want, and help us create a completely interactive
site.
