Questions & Answers with Neil Hogan #1.2.3

Q. I would like to learn to play guitar chords to join a folk group at my youth center. How do you suggest I get started?

A. Most people can learn to play guitar chords pretty easily as long as they follow a few simple steps. My first recommendation is find a teacher near you who comes recommended by friends or guitar players you know. Most of my students come to me by word of mouth as it is. One of the main advantages about getting an instructor is they will usually help you avoid starting and developing bad habits. They will also be able to tell you which steps to take first or which areas to concentrate on.

My next suggestion would be to start with a few easy chords, like Am, E and maybe C, and practice holding them down while you strum steadily. Further recommendations along this line can be found in the Building Blocks section under Chords.

Other helpful suggestions can be found here- guitar lessons online.
