TARGET Members will have any Charts, TAB, and Guitar Pro Files Down By The River was one of the first jamming tunes from Neil Young. Others in the same vein would include Cowgirl In The Sand, Southern Man, Like A Hurricane, etc. Neil frequently plays an acoustic version, sometimes as part of a medley that includes Cinnamon Girl and The Loner. He uses a Double Dropped D tuning (DADGBD) for this, which slightly changes some of the chord fingerings. The song is in common (4/4) time and revolves around the chords Em7 and A, making it in the key of D major. However, the tonic note is E, putting this in the Dorian mode. The lead can be played using the E minor pentatonic scale.

I remember going to high school a college dances and bands would play this song and get in a groove and you would be slow dancing for fifteen or twenty minuthes. It was great.written by aldridge, March 09, 2011
So tell us the rest of the story. What's the title of the song refer to?written by bronyaur, March 16, 2010
Wonderful stuff but it is a bit frustrating to hear Neil do a lovely play through and then not add the tab the way he played it and teach a much simpler version. It would be great to have both versions. This stuff is great and Neil is a great instructor. written by Paul Paris, December 29, 2009
I love hearing you talk about Neil Young, he's been on of my favorites since I was a little kid thanks to my Dad. And I'm only now (at the age of 26) REALLY starting to get into all of his music. Thanks for the lesson this song pops into my head atleast once a day so it's about time I learned it, and thanks to this lesson I finally have, thank you Neil awesome lessons.written by rhetoriccamel, September 13, 2009
I think the part you are asking about is the attachment above titled "Opening Lead." Check it out and let me know. Neilwritten by Neil, July 09, 2009
Hi Neil; I recently signed up for your Target program. I am watching your Down By The River lesson. So far so good with the exception of Page 5. Would be possible for you to email me the tab to the section outlined on page 5 that begins at 3:39? This section is what is played over and over again up until the they play the C Bm C section. Thanks. Waynewritten by Wayne Baxter, July 09, 2009
Neil, Once again thank you for this site. I've been on quite a Neil kick lately and wanted to know if you can complet the 3 song medley by adding The Loner to the Target program as well. That would be fantastic. Also I've been working on his song Natual Beauty from the Harvest Moon album. Another in Double drop D. I just love this tuning. Thanks.
