It was released on the Grateful Dead album American Beauty in 1970. Friend Of The Devil is in a simple 4 time but better counted in 2, making it in cut time (2/2). This is mostly due to the quick tempo of the song. The feel is mainly a folk style, although there are definite leanings toward bluegrass, partly due to the addition of the mandolin. It is played in the key of G, and features the descending major scale as the main theme

Neil: Allow me to disagree with you - the speed is just right. This song should not dawdle. You've got it spot on. We just need to build up to optimum speed. Thanks. This is one of the reasons/songs I joined way back. Congratulations. You shone on this one. Jeff Bwritten by Jeffrey Browitt, March 18, 2010

Hi Neil, Despite my huge collection of Dead (and Garcia+Grisman), I only have one version of Friend (a live Dead one, fast) and I can't figure out exactly what is considered the bridge. This is a really good lesson, but the bridge is barely covered, and I'm not even sure where it goes. Also, your tab only has the bass notes, but I think the strum goes in there too (the Dead seems to be doing some electric improvisation there). Can you elaborate a little on this? I really enjoyed this lesson--picked it up easily, though I am no where near being able to reach acceptable speed yet. I'd love to be able to play this one end to end--even slow, it's fun for others (and will satisfy some of those country friends, because this is about as close as I will get).written by Johnson Roberts, June 02, 2009
Neil, are you going to teach any solos to Friend of the Devil?written by roger wilkinson, May 25, 2009
I had never heard this song - now it is in my bag 'o songs!! I chose to learn this one cause it is the closest to a bluegrass song that I have heard here. I really like it. Great lesson. Thanks Neil!written by Steve, May 24, 2009
