learning to play guitar

Questions & Answers with Neil Hogan - #17

Q. I havealways been interested in learning to play guitar and am not really sure whereto start. What are your main suggestions for an absolute beginner?

A. The absolute beginner has an incredible amount of potential in thequest of learning to play guitar. They also have a very precarious route aheadof them if they are not careful and meticulous in this pursuit.

Many teachers consider thebeginning student the easiest to teach. On one hand this is somewhat truebecause everything you have to show them is new to them. On the other hand, this is the beginning of their most formative time to be learning. Thefoundation has to be rock solid before they can move on to the more adventurousand fun stuff. It is very important to move slowly and methodically through allthe proper techniques and concepts. Too many students get caught up in theexcitement of moving on to new songs before they have gotten enough out of theones they have been working on for a while.

Most of my students really enjoystudying music. This is an important thing to keep in mind. The journey has tobe fun and entertaining as well as educational to be considered worthwhile.

On last important thing toremember when you are learning to play the guitar is that there is no end toit. There are a lot of small goals along the way but it will become a hobby forlife.

to play guitar chords

Questions & Answers with Neil Hogan #1.2.3

Q. I would like to learn to play guitar chords to join a folk group at my youth center. How do you suggest I get started?

A. Most people can learn to play guitar chords pretty easily as long as they follow a few simple steps. My first recommendation is find a teacher near you who comes recommended by friends or guitar players you know. Most of my students come to me by word of mouth as it is. One of the main advantages about getting an instructor is they will usually help you avoid starting and developing bad habits. They will also be able to tell you which steps to take first or which areas to concentrate on.

My next suggestion would be to start with a few easy chords, like Am, E and maybe C, and practice holding them down while you strum steadily. Further recommendations along this line can be found in the Building Blocks section under Chords.
